District Deputy’s Report
Vernon Hawkins, Jr., PGK, PFN 301-336-0284

I just returned from the Supreme Convention in Quebec, Canada, as a delegate for the Maryland province. The convention was a very uplifting experience for all who were able to attend. The opening Mass was beautiful in that so many Cardinals, Bishops and Priests participated to show their support for what we do as Knights of Columbus. There were numerous national and international awards presented. The Maryland province did quite well, receiving awards in Membership, New Council Development, Insurance, and the Supreme Knight’s Circle of Honor Award recognizing State Deputy performance based on achievement of 100 percent or more of their net gain quota for the fraternal year. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson’s annual report, delivered Tuesday at the 126th Supreme Convention, highlights achievements and call on Knights to live out their faith in every aspect of their lives.

Delegates to the 126th Supreme Convention August 7th adopted resolutions calling for “legal and constitutional protection … for the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others” and opposing “any governmental action or policy that promotes abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia, assisted suicide and other offenses against life.”

I was please to receive at the Convention a copy of “A Program Supplement To KNIGHTLINE”, a Special Awards Issue. It contained a detailed listing of the 2007-2008 winners in five categories. Councils of our very own District were winners in 4 of the 5 categories as follows: Star Council (St. Jerome 5564 and Fr. Michael C. Kidd 14455); Columbian (Sacred Heart 2577, Mother Seton 5381, James C. Fletcher, Jr. 11422, and Fr. Peter C. Boyle 12254), and Father McGivney (Mother Seton 5381). Congratulations all around for a truly outstanding fraternal year.

Please remember to pray to our Blessed Mother, our Patroness Mary and to help and aid the elderly in any way that you can for “We Are Called To Serve.”

Vivat Jesus!
