FOURTH DEGREE

Any Third Degree member in good standing, one year after the anniversary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights’ respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups (called “assemblies”). Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity that has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus.

FRATERNAL BENEFITS: KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE

Roger L. Doucette, PGK
“Are you in good ____?”
“Protect the IF in life.”
We all see the advertisements for these insurance companies, large, popular, well recognized by everyone. These ads cost money, funds for which come the premiums paid by policy holders.
Our insurance company — KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE — advertises in more quiet ways. Columbia Magazine and occasional articles/advertisements in Catholic diocesan publications constitute our promotional efforts. Yet, our story is very compelling: A++ rating from A.M. Best, AAA from Standard and Poor, Certification from the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association. We reach these coveted rankings year after year, a long record of achievement in marketing, service and solid performance.
What this means is that you as a Member have access to quality products to protect your family today and in the future. You owe it to yourself and your family to review your current coverage. Remember the final act of love for your family is the check delivered to your widow. You need to ensure that this check will enable her and your children to continue to live the life you have worked all these years to provide. You alone shoulder this responsibility.
Call me at 240-678-6680 for a free review of your current policies — from any company. This review may lead to greater peace of mind — a great benefit of your membership in our Order.

O great and glorious God, You imbued Your holy priest. Father Michael J. McGivney, with deep priestly virtue and especially with pastoral concern for the poor, the orphan, the widow, for the Christian education of youth, for the protection of the faith of the working man of his day.
Now that his priestly ministry continues to spread to countless millions throughout the world, through the efforts and influence of the Order of the Knights of Columbus, which Father McGivney founded, we beseech Your, Heavenly Father, to raise Your faithful servant, Michael, to the honors of the altar. We ask this favor through our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother, Mary and our Mother, Amen.

First Degree New Member – The Fr. Michael C. Kidd Council has reached a membership of 76 knights. On February 19, 2009, Ariel A. Reyes obtained the first degree of knighthood in our council. The exemplification ceremony was conducted at the James C. Fletcher Council #11422. Let us welcome Brother Reyes and get him actively involved in the activities of our council.
There will be a Third Degree on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Sacred Heart Council 2577, located at Boswell Hall, 6111 Columbian Way, Bowie, MD 20715 (301-262-1041). We have a firm commitment of nine candidates from our Council to be in attendance. Report time for candidates will be at 1:00 PM sharp (NO EARLIER) and the degree will start promptly at 1:30 PM. Let’s bring all the eligible Second Degree brothers to get their Full Knighthood in the Third Degree. We all know that Third Degree members are more committed Knights and the strong fiber in our Order. Brothers in the Archdiocese of Washington District (AWD), this is another opportunity before your Exemplification on March 22th. Please advise the candidates to wear coat and tie during the degree. We had to give word of our numbers by Tuesday, February 24. This will be a degree to remember!
While it would normally be important to participate in an activity like the March Membership Blitz; every month seems like a blitz at Father Kidd Council! As of February 10, the state had recruited 734 new members. It lost 279 through suspension and 328 though death and transfer. That is an overall increase of 127. Total membership is at 26,553. Currently, 27 out of 150 councils have not recruited at least one new member. We are just a year old and have already reached 76 members! Father Jenkins joked at the Chapter meeting that half of the increase for the whole state belongs to us! About 20 Knights have recently earned the Silver Knight Award; a few were in attendance (Father Kidd was represented). Later, several more Knights were cited as winners of the Golden Knight Award (yes, again Father Kidd was represented).

MEMBERSHIP (January 2009)
The Membership Document (#100), a qualified prospect’s passport into the Knights of Columbus, has been upgraded with a new look to make it more user friendly. This redesigned form replaces all previous versions of the Membership Document and should be used immediately. Old versions of the form #100 should be discarded or destroyed after December 31, 2008.
The most apparent change to the form is its size, which has been enlarged to 8.5 inches by 11 inches, to allow for a larger type font to make it easier to read, allow more space for entries and to assist in determining the applicant’s interests and preferences. The document is also printed in a new maroon color. Although its physical look has changed, the information collected through it remains mainly the same.
The major revision to the Membership Document is the “New Member Annuity”, which is now available to introduce a new member and his wife to the Knights of Columbus Insurance program and to assist in planning financial stability for retirement.
A mailing with copies of the new Membership Documents was sent to financial secretaries of record in October. Additional copies of the Form #100 are available from the Supply Department.
