COUNCIL ACTIVITIES—Geony J. Provido (May 2009)

New Appointments in Council Committee – Daniel Njingeh and Mark Manapul have been appointed as Fundraising and Sports Coordinators, respectively.
With his appointment, Dr. Njingeh is expected to take the lead in undertaking one major fundraising event for Fr. Michael C. Kidd Council every quarter. The first event he is tasked to coordinate is the conduct of the Spaghetti Dinner and Auction which will be held sometime in May 2008.

Mark Manapul, who is currently serving as the Warden has been named coordinator for sports. His immediate task is to plan for a sports program for the Council this summer. Various sports activities are being studied such as the ongoing Golf clinic, bowling, and the revival of the softball program that was started last year. Other physical activities will also be explored.

The Council Activities Group is meeting April 18 to hear presentations from the two coordinators and to explore various fundraising and sports activities for the incoming fraternal year. The Council Committee is headed by Geony Provido, with Rodelio Bunag as Vice Chairperson.

The SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER was a great success. Around 200 people attended and the Knights were out in their identifying blue shirts. Not only did everyone have a good time; it was a worthwhile fundraiser, too. After all bills were paid, we made $385 profit! Many thanks to all those who made the event work.

The MD State Council – Knights of Columbus Charity Fund

It provides financial assistance to individuals in Temporary Urgent Need . Started with the idea of “a penny a day from each member” the Maryland State Council Knights of Columbus Charity Fund has the potential to raise almost $100,000 a year with even that modest gift from each member. Larger gifts can make greater assistance possible. The Charity Fund is a source of support after Councils have assisted with charitable requests. All applications should come through a Council, reviewed by the Grand Knight and District Deputy.

Brother Knights: Please help the Maryland State Council Knights of Columbus Charity Fund with your annual tax-deductible gift. The need for support has never been greater.

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES—Geony J. Provido

Fr Kidd Council can now start counting time…in years. We will be exactly one year old come February 4, the same day in 2008 when 44 men of Holy Family Parish united and formalized the creation of the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus. The Council has been blessed. Membership, which currently stands at 71, is close to doubling since the Council’s formation.

We had planned to hold our first anniversary celebration on February 16. However, we were concerned that it fell on a holiday and then we were honored to be asked to have another Second Degree. That degree, due to reasons unknown, was taken from us and so we will race now to have our celebration on Tuesday, February 17 at 7:30 PM. We hope to present spouses with rosaries just as members received theirs a year ago. All members are encouraged to participate and to bring contributions to the event.

Given that our spaghetti dinner was cancelled, we hope that our pancake supper fundraiser will fare better. It is scheduled for Shrove Tuesday, February 24. (see flyer at end of newsletter)

We have come to the end of the Redskins season. We will report next month how much we made from the concessions at games. COUNCIL ACTIVITIES—Geony J. Provido (December 2008)

The Memorial Mass on November 26 was both a Council and a Parish or Church event. Along with parishioners buried from Holy Family during the past year, we also remembered our beloved Father Kidd. The first reading was done by Paul Batson (Pro-Life Chairman), the psalm was read by Terry Reinhart (Deputy Grand Knight), the second reading by Eugene Batson, the general intercessions by George Johnson (Grand Knight), the calling of the names of the dead was done by Ujuchris Okereh (Chancellor) and our two acolytes during the Gospel were James Moore (Tootsie Roll Chairman) and Vincent Hubbard (Church Director).

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES—Geony J. Provido (December 2008)

Christmas Party – We are announcing our very first Christmas Party on the 12th of December, 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM at Fr. Kidd Hall.

“Share Your Blessings This Christmas” is our theme. Instead of bringing and exchanging gifts members are asked to contribute the small amount of $10 (collected at the Dec. 1 meeting). This entitles a member to raffle tickets, the proceeds which will go to charity (gifts to the poor for Christmas). Surely the amount is nothing compared to the many blessings we have received this year.

We are having a potluck dinner again. Please email back your contribution. It can be any of the following:

• APPETIZER
• DESSERT
• SALAD
• MAIN COURSE
• DRINKS

The party is open to all knights and their families. The attire is casual.
Hall Cleaners – Two brother knights helped to clean the hall after a parish rental in early November: Mark Manapul and Ace Balbalec. Given that it was an “after midnight job” the parish was particularly appreciative for their efforts. The council gets a small stipend for the assistance and good will is created between the knights and Holy Family Parish.

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES—Geony J. Provido (August 2008)

Golf Clinic – This is an avenue for members who are playing golf to bond together. A number of brothers are also interested in learning the game. We hope to schedule future games. We may even play teams as with father/son or daughter.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? (Religious Edition) – Rescheduled from an earlier date, the parish DRE asked the knights to handle both promotion and the food for this fun activity. We will be distributing advertising flyers and either selling tickets or food for the event. This event touches many areas of our operations. +++Second softball practice held+++

Eighty-nine passes without dropping the ball.

A modest achievement by any standards, but for the knights who went to play softball Saturday morning of July 19, 2008, such is a good way to measure improvement in the level of team play. Slowly, but surely, the knights are working on improving individual skills and team cohesion. This is too early to say that the Council has finally have put together a team, but looking at the ways things are going, it is headed in that direction.

Saturday’s event at the baseball field at the back of St. Matthias Church in Lanham was the second practice session for the knights since softball was adopted as a sports activity for the knight of Fr. Michael Kidd Council. The very first practice was held last June 14, 2009 at the same baseball field and was attended by eight K of C members. In the future, it is expected that members of the parish youth will be participating in the bimonthly practice games.

Sign up and be a part of this team that in the future is expected be in the Hall of Fame! (Let’s pray to that, if it doesn’t work, let’s pray some more)

DISTRICT DEPUTY REPORT
Vernon Hawkins, Jr., PFN, PGK
vhawkinsjr@aol.com (301) 336-0284

To all council officers and members, I share with you my “10 Keys to Success” for this new fraternal year.

1. Be Growth Oriented 365 Days a Year. Establish a quarterly goal for membership and work toward it. If you don’t succeed, retool your ideas for the second quarter.
2. Establish Long-Term Growth Goals. Develop an overall long-term goal for your council. Where do you want the council to be in five years?
3. Create Team-Oriented Officers. Every elected and appointed officer should work for the goals outlined by the Grand Knight.
4. Maintain a Positive Attitude and Communicate It. Set the tone for the Knights of Columbus in your parish or community.
5. Focus on Youth and Youthful Leadership. You don’t need to be young to be youthful and youth oriented. The future of our Order depends on us reaching out to the next generation of Knights. If we don’t reach out to them now, we risk losing their interest to other groups or pursuits.
6. Conduct Leadership Training Programs. Attend State/District/Council-sponsored meetings and training sessions. Review key correspondence from the Supreme, State, and District with fellow officers.
7. Establish Accountability. Plan your membership and volunteer programs beforehand and afterwards review their success or shortcoming. Keep an eye on improvement.
8. Have and Communicate Clear Priorities. Make your membership and fraternal goals clear and communicate them clearly to your officers, to members at meetings and in your bulletin, or at other regular intervals.
9. Be Open to Change. Constantly assess your own performance and that of the council. If something is not working, correct it.
10. Make Effective Use of Your District Deputy/Warden. The District #6 staff consists of experienced Knights. These men, all Past Grand Knights and Past Faithful Navigators, are an invaluable resource for your council. Do not hesitate to call on us for assistance.

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES—Geony J. Provido

The dinner/auction on June 21 was a great success! The mystery bags proved especially amusing and Terry Reinhart, in particular, proved a good sport about his peculiar winnings. We are considering a number of fundraising proposals at this time and will report back to the council when these are clarified.

The parish DRE has asked that the knights consider handling the promotion (flyers) for the ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER – RELIGIOUS EDITION. If we supplied or catered the food, then we could also sell tickets for a modest amount and help fill council coffers.

Charter Night is scheduled for July 7 and word has come down to us that both the current State Deputy and Past State Deputy are planning on being present. Let us try to have all members, especially the charter members, present for this event.

We are still looking for volunteers to help with the concessions at Redskins football games. This can become an important way for us to raise council income. Please sign up today! Kevin Renze has taken the lead in trying to recruit volunteers.

He chatted with Bob Worthington about the Redskins concession stand fundraising opportunity. Bob provided the following general information (so far):

1. Game schedule (2 preseason and 8 home games [I need to confirm the commitment to support the August 3 game])

2. Time commitment is 6-7 hours per game, with report time at least 3 hours prior to game time

3. Park at Landover Mall by former Hechts store and take the free shuttle bus to Fed Ex Field (indicate you’re working concessions)

4. Uniform is black pants (with free hat and shirt provided early in the season)
Kevin is our point of contact for Bob to confirm volunteers/substitutions from our council. Please review the schedule information below and indicate to Kevin via email how many (and/or which) games you would like to work. Our council goal is to supply Bob with 5 people per game (or more if backup slots need to be filled).

Let’s have some fun and earn a few Franklin’s to support worthy activities and commitments!
