111th ANNUAL MARYLAND STATE CONVENTION
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
MAY 15, 16, 17, 2009 – PRINCESS ROYALE OCEANFRONT RESORT
91st STREET – OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND
CONVENTION REGISTRATION INFORMATION
— Everyone attending the Convention must be registered and must wear their convention badge at all times. Convention badges are required for admittance to all convention activities. This is most critical when attending activities in the hospitality rooms and atrium.
— Register before April 15th to avoid the late fees. Walk-in registration packages take time to prepare so even if you have missed the late fee date, send your registration to Bill McMahon anyway so that your convention package will be ready when you arrive. Remember your wife will need her convention badge to attend the lady’s activity Friday evening.
— Grand Knights & Delegates: Convention Registration is separate from
Convention Credentials – YOU MUST COMPLETE BOTH.
— Banquet tickets are on a first come basis – send in your registration early to assure seating at the banquet.
Why must everyone register and where does the money go?
No money comes from the general State Council Funds. The Convention depends entirely on the registration fees and Convention Program Ads to balance the books. The Convention costs include printing expenses, Convention meeting room rentals, audio-visual equipment rentals, compensation checks for Grand Knights, Delegates and District Deputies, music for Friday and Saturday nights, convention gifts and much more.
Without all of your support we would have problems putting on a fun filled convention.
The Convention Committee looks forward to helping you have an enjoyable time down the ocean and we hope these tips can assist you in a smooth registration process and an enjoyable experience.

Congratulations to Fr. Michael C. Kidd Council 14455 for achieving the Father McGivney and the Founders’ Awards as of March 1, 2009. The Fr. McGivney award is awarded to councils that achieve a 5 percent net gain in membership for the fraternal year. The Founders’ Award is awarded when a council meets or exceeds a 2.5 percent net gain of insurance members for the fraternal year. Congratulations All Around.

DISTRICT DEPUTY’S REPORT
Vernon Hawkins, Jr., PGK, PFN, DD
Thanks to everyone for the great effort that you have made during the first half of the Fraternal Year. We have made many outstanding successes, but we have much more to accomplish in the second half of the year.
One area that we need to continue to focus on is …MEMBERSHIP. The theme for membership is “The Experience of a Lifetime”. At the beginning of this New Year, let each one of us offer an eligible Catholic man “The Experience of a Lifetime” by asking him to become a part of our great organization.
Only 3% of Catholic men belong to our Order. Many Catholic men are looking for ways to help their church and community. What better way could there be than belonging to the greatest Catholic, Fraternal, Family, Service Organization in the World.
Your Grand Knight has the registration forms for this year’s Convention at the Ocean for May 15th to 17th. There will be formal activities for our children again this year, and a sign-up sheet is available for those activities also. Don’t forget, the Convention is for all Knights, not just for the Grand Knight and Delegates. But you must register. Registrations are due by April 15th. Register now and we will see you at the Ocean.
God Bless each of you for all that you do for the Knights of Columbus. Etoile and I wish you a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year. Remember, “We Are Called To Serve.”

Brothers,
The Membership Document (#100), a qualified prospect’s passport into the Knights of Columbus, has been upgraded with a new look to make it more user friendly.
This redesigned form replaces all previous versions of the Membership
Document and should be used immediately. Old versions of the form #100 should be discarded/distroyed after December 31, 2008.
The most apparent change to the form is its size, which has been
enlarged to 8.5 inches by 11 inches, to allow for a larger type font to
make it easier to read, allow more space for entries and to assist in
determining the applicant’s interests and preferences. The document is
also printed in a new maroon color. Although its physical look has
changed, the information collected through it remains mainly the same.
The major revision to the Membership Document is the “New Member
Annuity”, which is now available to introduce a new member and his wife to the Knights of Columbus Insurance program and to assist in planning financial stability for retirement.
A mailing with copies of the new Membership Documents was sent to
financial secretaries of record in October. Additional copies of the
Form #100 are available from the Supply Department.
Vivat Jesus!

Worthy Grand Knights and My Brothers All,
What A District, What A Team! I have received several emails from District members inquiring as to whether all District #6 councils made the delivery of the First Quarter Surge With Service Reports on time. Not only were they interested in their council, but the District as a whole. That’s the characteristics of a District and a Team. I Am Proud To Report That YES, all District #6 Councils made their delivery and ON TIME. Thank You!!! The Quest For The Star Continues, With All Councils Still In The Hunt For The STAR.
Fraternally,
Vern Hawkins

‘CAMPAIGN FOR PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES’
One of the most popular and successful programs conducted by Knights of Columbus councils benefits people with intellectual disabilities by collecting funds outside of stores and on street corners from the public. In appreciation, the donor is offered a piece of candy, often a Tootsie Roll. The high visibility of this program has led to the campaign being referred to as the “Tootsie Roll Drive.” While this nickname is understandable, it is misleading since the Order has no official tie to Tootsie Rolls or their manufacturer. Many councils participate in the same fundraising drive, but distribute other items. References to this program should highlight the good the money does, not advertise candy. It is strongly recommended that this project be promoted as the “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities.”

O great and glorious God, You imbued Your holy priest. Father Michael J. McGivney, with deep priestly virtue and especially with pastoral concern for the poor, the orphan, the widow, for the Christian education of youth, for the protection of the faith of the working man of his day.
Now that his priestly ministry continues to spread to countless millions throughout the world, through the efforts and influence of the Order of the Knights of Columbus, which Father McGivney founded, we beseech Your, Heavenly Father, to raise Your faithful servant, Michael, to the honors of the altar. We ask this favor through our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother, Mary and our Mother, Amen.
