CHURCH ACTIVITIES—Vincent K. Hubbard (May 2009)

Remember that May is a special month devoted to the Blessed Mother and that we will also celebrate Mother’s Day. The parish has a special partnership with the Knights in the distribution of flowers to mothers. The Columbian year is quickly coming to a close, but we are hoping to sponsor a Marian Hour of Prayer with the Our Lady of Grace icon from Supreme.

Monthly Corporate Communion Mass – Our Mass for the council will be on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:30 PM. Our men are expected to read, serve and help with the cup. After Mass we can offer the Novena of the Miraculous Medal with the other parishioners and add our three staple Knights of Columbus prayers. Come and bring your families!

Father Michael J. McGivney Guild – We would invite all our members, especially our newest brothers to join the Guild. There is no cost.

First Saturday Eucharistic Adoration – Holy Family Parish offers this monthly opportunity for us and our families to spend an hour or even 30 minutes between 9:30 AM to 5 PM at prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance upon the altar. Our Lord is asking each of us, “Can you not spend just an hour with me?”

CHURCH ACTIVITIES—Vincent K. Hubbard (April 2009)

Our Council Knights participated and attended the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 7:30 PM.

The Father Michael C. Kidd Knights of Columbus Council #14455 of Mitchellville, MD sponsored a SOUP AND STATIONS NIGHT at Holy Family Church. The evening began at 6:00 PM with a warm, delicious and filling soup in the parish hall. Approximately 40 parishioners enjoyed the home-made crab and zucchini bisque soup. Shrimp eggrolls were also offered. At 7:30 PM we assembled in the church for the Stations of the Cross. Our chaplain, Father Joseph Jenkins led us in a biblical way of the cross composed by the late Pope John Paul II. While one brother carried the cross from station to station, other Knights came up to the pulpit to read the appropriate passages from the New Testament. Our priest presided from the altar. The prayers were composed of three parts: leader (priest), reader (Knight) and the people (congregation). More than a hundred people attended Stations and just over 20 Knights were involved.

Monthly Corporate Communion Mass – Our Mass for the council will be on Wednesday, April 22 at 7:30 PM. Our men are expected to read, serve and help with the cup. After Mass we can offer the Novena of the Miraculous Medal with the other parishioners and add our three staple Knights of Columbus prayers. Come and bring your families!

John DeMers’ Play: I, PAUL

Performed by Charles D. Baker

The Year of Saint Paul – Pope Benedict has declared June 28, 2008, to June 29, 2009 “The Year of Saint Paul” on the occasion of the bi-millennium of his birth, which historians have placed between the years 7 and 10 A.D. In declaring this special Jubilee Year dedicated to the Apostle Paul, Pope Benedict stated “Paul, a former violent persecutor of Christians, when he fell to the ground dazzled by the divine light on the road to Damascus, did not hesitate to change sides to the Crucified One and followed him without second thoughts. He lived and worked for Christ, for him he suffered and died. How timely his example is today!”

To help celebrate this Jubilee Year, Sacred Heart Council #2577 is sponsoring a play “I, Paul” by John De Mers and performed by Charles D. Baker in the Knights of Columbus Hall, Bowie, MD on Saturday, January 17th, 2009 at 7:00 pm.

Brief Play Description: The greatest evangelist that ever lived. A great Jew turns into a great Christian in the twinkling of an eye. The characterization is such that Christ relents to the constant pleadings of Paul to release him for one hour and forty minutes so he can have that opportunity to preach again. Imagine that! Paul is back, and you will never listen to the letters of St. Paul in the same way again.

There is no charge for this performance and All Are Welcome.

CHURCH ACTIVITIES—Vincent K. Hubbard (December 2008)

We want to thank everyone who participated in the Mass of Remembrance on Wednesday, November 26 at 7:30 PM. Those knights who participated are noted under COUNCIL ACTIVITIES.

Riding Metro? – Look for the “Come Home for Christmas” ads during the month of December. The ads, featuring an image of the Nativity, are sponsored each year by several of our downtown parishes.

Monthly Corporate Communion Mass – Last month we had our first corporate communion Mass. It was also our Memorial Mass for both the Council and Holy Family Parish. Because the fourth Wednesday in December is Christmas Eve, there will be no council Mass in December. The next Mass for the council will be on Wednesday, January 28 at 7:30 PM. Our men are expected to read, serve and help with the cup. After Mass we can offer the Novena of the Miraculous Medal with the other parishioners and add our three staple Knights of Columbus prayers. From time to time we might also offer refreshments following Mass. The Knights and their ladies and families are all welcome to participate.

Father Michael J. McGivney Guild – We would invite all our members, especially our newest brothers to join the Guild. There is no cost. Members are to daily offer the K of C prayer that Father McGivney be elevated to the honors of the altar.

Simbang Gabi Masses – Given the large number of Filipino brothers in our council, we should make a real effort to work with the informal Filipino/American Heritage Group regarding the special string of Masses before Christmas. All parishioners are invited to participate at Holy Family.

• Weekdays, December 15-19, 22-23 @ 7:30 PM
• Saturday, December 20 @ 9:00 AM
• Sunday, December 21 @ 1:30 PM

Reconciliation will be available weekdays before Mass from 7:00 to 7:30 PM.

CHURCH ACTIVITIES—Vincent K. Hubbard (November 2008)

First Saturday Eucharistic Adoration – Holy Family Parish offers this monthly opportunity for us and our families to spend an hour at prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance upon the altar. Our Lord is asking each of us, “Can you not spend just an hour with me?” A schedule is being circulated. Please sign it and make a monthly commitment. The worship ends at 5:00 PM with benediction right after the community prays and sings the Divine Mercy devotion.

Father Jenkins would like to plan a Memorial Mass some time during the month of November for both the council and the parish. We would remember our beloved Father Kidd who died December 31 last year and pray by name for all those buried from the parish in the last year. More details will be forthcoming.

The Maryland State Council is offering an Ignatian style silent retreat at Loyola Retreat House in Faulkner, MD on the weekend of Friday, Nov. 7 (6:45 PM) to Sunday, Nov. 8 (12:30 PM). The cost is $215. Call Arnie Calhoun at 301-568-3698 to register and contact the retreat center at 301-392-0809 (Peggy Poole).

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE

September 11th

God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred. God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost … may not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all.

Pope Benedict XVI Prayer Service at Ground Zero April 20th, 2008

Monthly Corporate Communion Mass – It is customary for each council to select a regular Mass for members to attend. The State program book recommends the 5th Sunday of the month, but other times can be chosen as well. For instance, St. Pius X Council in Forestville invites members to a 1st Saturday Mass which is immediately followed with fellowship, coffee and donuts. Fletcher Council invites members to 11 AM Mass on the 3rd Sunday. Jobs and our charity outreach might make Saturday morning Mass difficult and Sundays can be very busy for the parish, particularly with the Prep program for children.

Father Jenkins recommended that the Father Michael C. Kidd Council adopt as its own the regularly scheduled parish 7:30 PM Mass on the 4th Wednesday of every month. Our men can read, serve and help with the cup. After Mass we can offer the Novena of the Miraculous Medal with the other parishioners and add our three staple Knights of Columbus prayers. It might be a good night for an Executive or a Programs Meeting after Mass, too. From time to time we might also offer refreshments following Mass. The Knights and their ladies and families would be welcome.

Father Michael J. McGivney Guild – This is a simple program to conduct and we would like to have full participation. We will offer applications at council meetings and make them available in the monthly newsletter. There is no cost. Each member will receive regular updates and newsletters on Father McGivney’s cause for sainthood: filled with devotional ideas and items, and letters from other guild members reporting favors from Father McGivney. Members would daily offer the K of C prayer that Father McGivney be elevated to the honors of the altar.

CHURCH ACTIVITIES—Vincent K. Hubbard (August 2008)

We will be participating this year in the KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS campaign.

The new State Deputy has placed a special emphasis upon the Divine Mercy devotion and so that will be a part of this year’s projects.

We did a rosary for life a few months ago but plan on doing a Living Rosary as well.

Decisions will have to be made soon about the Vocations program.

Along with the chaplain, we are stressing the rosary and how we should keep it in our pockets and offer it daily. Father Jenkins is also asking all our members to join the Father McGivney Guild— but more about this next month.

CHURCH ACTIVITIES—Vincent K. Hubbard

The Maryland State Council urges some form of involvement regarding Holy Land Outreach. A number of our knights and parishioners bought olive wood religious goods on the weekend of June 28 and June 29 from the vendor Luai Helal. Father Jenkins purchased a lovely carved Last Supper for the rectory and a bust of Christ for a young man entering the seminary this Fall. Purchases benefitted the struggling Christians of the Holy Land.

Knights participated in both the Memorial Day and Independence Day Masses at Holy Family. We are hoping to set up a Corporate Communion Mass schedule for the year. However, we have to meet with the other activity directors first.

CHURCH ACTIVITIES—Fred F. Laureles

Since our founding in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, the Knights of Columbus has been in solidarity with the Catholic Church, the Holy Father and the bishops, priests, and religious in union with him. We have been oriented around a Catholic parish from the beginning, and it is in the thousands of Catholic parishes where the good works of the Knights of Columbus are manifest. Support for the Catholic Church is the hallmark of the Knights of Columbus activity at all levels of our order. The Church Activities Program seek to support our members and their families with church activities that express our unity in our faith, our devotion to our Church, and our support of those who serve in the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. Mark Your Calendars Knights are invited to serve and to read at the parish Memorial Day Mass on June 26 at 9:00 AM.

The Maryland State Council urges some form of involvement regarding Holy Land Outreach. Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29, the vendor Luai Helal will come to Holy Family and sell olive wood carvings after all Masses. We could help set up, distribute flyers and maybe purchase some of these wonderful items (images of Jesus, Mary, Nativity scenes, the Last Supper, etc). These objects would edify our homes and we would help the struggling Christians of the Holy Land. The Christians of the Holy Land have suffered terribly given the loss of tourism, especially in Bethlehem. We might not be able to get to them but they can reach us. Our generosity can make a big difference in their lives.

The vendor writes the pastor the following letter:

Dear Father,

My name is LUAI HELAL, members of the Christian Families in the Holy Land (Bethlehem).

Our mission here is to help the more than 200 Christian families of Bethlehem. These families once made up 25% of the population in the Holy land. Due to recent events in the Middle East, it has caused these families to face devastating economical strain, and caused the population to decrease to less than 2%. These families have relied on the income from selling their religious hand-carved olive wood artifacts to tourists. So we have come to the United States to try to help support these families by bringing their religious artifacts here to sell in the U.S.

The last five years were very tough for all the Christians in the Holy Land— and this is the only source of income for us. We try to market our work for the sake of Christian families.

I am asking for permission to visit your church on the weekend, to display some of the religious hand-carved olive wood artifacts after Mass. It would be an honor for us to be invited to your church, so that we may carry out our mission. They are wonderful Christmas gifts as well as for all occasions.

May God be with you and may God richly bless his people for now and forever. Amen.

GOD BLESS

Luai Helal
